Guide to surviving the Theatre Festival

by KRISHA FORD
THEATRE STINGER WRITER

The festival experience can be a wild one. Fighting the nerves, nailing the lines, wearing a silly costurne, finding the right room (on time), all while having the fear and anticipation that just builds up stronger and stonger as it comes closer and closer to the festival's finals.

Well, don't sweat it, I'm sure that you are very prepared. Still, there are a lot of small details that many times get overlooked. So here are just a few tips, reminder and suggetions (based on the experience of a festival pro, such as myself) that will help you calm your nerves and give you a memorable and hassle-free festival expericence.

  • Bring something to sit or lie on. You're going to have a lot of downtime between workshops and events, so you will need someplace to rest your bones. A blanket, or some fold out chairs should do the trick. Some people even bring tents. Hey what ever make you comfortable!
  • Take something warm. It's most likely going to be cold, so along with your costumes, throw in a sweater or jacket to keep you warm, and if it doesn't get cold, sue me.
  • Watch the weather channel. If you don't feel like watching, at least find out some way what the weather is going to be like. Last year it rained, and it really sucked for those who didn't bring an umbrella. Be prepared; be prepared.
  • Money never hurts. Don't forget to bring a few extra bucks for memorablilia, food, or anything else that calls for cash.
  • Know where you are going. When you finally get settled down, and you've set your stuff at your base camp remember to take'some extra time to find out were you're going to perform. This way you won't lose a load over being lost as you start running all over the campus one minute before your call time.
  • Most importantly, breathe, try to stay calm and have fun. Remember that it's a festival, not the Oscars. Our main goal is to make sure you enjoy yourselves.
